Elisa, I agree with you on not acknowledging the opposition's argument, tends to vitiate one's own. this is exactly why I used such strong language in my blog post on Blog Action Day. Especially where retooling for a new technological approach to the probability of global warming is concerned, the opposition has been resolutely ostrich like, or worse, clinging to some minority opinions, and hanging their entire argument on them.

In large part, these are the same people who so seriously doubt the "theory" of evolution, that they either won't teach it in public schools, or insist that "creation science" be taught as well.

I'll confess: I haven't studied "creation science," though I've read Genesis a few times.

My point is essentially yours: when one doesn't acknowledge even the possibility of the other's point-of-view, one's own is seen as less legitimate.

Haha, that's my point exactly. I actually told someone we "bombed" the moon cause it's so pretentious...always looking down on us all blue cheese facey and all. I would tend to agree, not sure that I really want to be living up there.

I also find it odd to investigate the possibility of living on the moon in case stuff goes horribly awry on Earth. Doesn't the Earth control the moon? In other words, any experimentation we do now is going to be voided in the event we actually have to initiate the findings.

Yay, I'm so excited that you commented Beth, I was actually going to email you to weigh in. You know I'm a big proponent of NRCM :) I don't want to go belly up!

Ok so this comment doesn't have as much to do with climate change as it does with that small blurb about the moon.

Bombing the moon is just ridiculous! What did the moon ever do to us, other than give us a little light in the night? Seriously though, do you know how much money was spent, wasted, on that experiment? I know the reason why they did it, but I think their reasoning is retarded and the money could have been spent on something MUCH more important.

If you could live on the moon right now, I wouldn't. I'm not interested in visiting or living on the moon in the least. I used to have a whole area on my blog dedicated to stupid studies and experiments…this moon bombing would have fit in nicely!

Thanks for this post. I would encourage you and others to visit the Natural Resources Council of Maine's website if you would like to read more specifically about global warming and its effects on coastal towns in Maine. You can view maps, read statements, fact sheets, and more at http://www.nrcm.org/sea_level_rise.asp.
