BlogCrush – Rich DeMatteo
Every week I’ll be updating The Webb with a little ditty about my most recent blogcrush – a blog that I follow frequently and find inspiration, laughter and deep thoughts from. You know who they are, those bloggers that you’ve never even met but you feel a strange connection…you almost have a little crush on them? These are most definitely folks on my blog roll, and if you are reading and subscribing to The Webb they should be on yours, too.
I first learned about this week’s #BlogCrush when he commented on my post asking if we as a society have gotten too nice. Not sure if he found his way over to the Webb from Brazen Careerist or a former #BlogCrush, but boy am I glad that he did. Rich DeMatteo is a great HR/staffing blogger who has a website with a super fun name, Corn On The Job. He is probably one of the most engaged people I’ve encountered on my Twitter feed as well, and we just “met up” less than a month ago.
The first thing you’ll notice when you get on to Rich’s blog is the awesome redesign by Matt Cheuvront. I’m a girl who loves a clean, structured and still fun blog, so I was happy to see the new Corn on the Job when it came out a couple weeks ago. Rich’s Twitter bio states that he is “here to help you relax, smile, laugh, and possibly secure your next big job. Won’t you be my neighbor?” And that’s exactly what Rich does, when he’s not finishing up grad school and coaching his collegiate roller hockey team. Though I know he did not coin the term, he was one of the first to really make me aware of the phenomenon known as “FUNemployment” and what to do during it. Of course I’m always a fan of anyone with some great goals and dreams for the future, especially when they involve both professional AND personal.
Corn On The Job is a great place to check in to for up to the minute realistic advice on your career and any job seeking. With Rich’s expertise and experience, he’s seen just about every angle of the hiring process (from unemploment to interviews to social media job seeking to career paths to layoffs.) Plus his background and degreework in Human Resources allow him the skills to cover some harder “conversation” topics like body odor and the kissyface email paradox, but in a very funny way. He makes things accessible by giving them real life application and his ideas for how to network if you are shy are fantastic. Though he’s only been blogging for less than half a year he is already building a loyal following of Corn Heads who turn to him for advice in helping them plan their professional future. In other words by this time next year Corn On The Job will be one of those sites that you can say you knew when.
So if you are looking for a great site to turn to for some good career and HR advice with a lot of humor and realism thrown in, check out Corn On The Job.

Eliza, where do you find these interesting people? I’m always eager to read about them. I need to stay on your radar more often so I can keep up with the awesome, yet intellectual people you have around. I’m glad we connected. Im going to take a look at his site now. Thanks
Cheila, I wish I knew! Rich actually found me so I suppose the more appropriate question to him would be how did someone so awesome and intellectual find his way here and decide to stick around.
Hi Cheila – I found Elisa through Matt Cheuvronts “Life Without Pants” (www.lifewithoutpants.com). Saw he conducted a blog review and I wanted to stop by and check it out. I stayed, and now look where I am!

Thank you so much for including me in your #blogcrush I’m truly honored!
Darn, I really did think I was the one that coined the term “FUNemployment”. My buddy Gus and I started saying it in late 2008 when I knew I was being let go and we planned a trip to Cancun. I should of tried to gain some copyright!

Well, thank YOU so much for putting out such quality work. Additionally for reaching out and building a relationship online. Those two things blipped you high on my #BlogCrush radar (and this post was half finished and scheduled when I told Jun he HAD to talk to you for career stuff.)
I’m not sure about the term, I do know the info I’ve got there from urban dictionary so maybe there are some folks you can take on in the copyrighting legal system.

You rock! Seriously, thanks for all the kind words. I’m just here speaking my mind and hoping to help people in the process. The bonus is that I’ve met people like you who bring amazing ideas and perspective to the table. Thanks for suggesting me to Jun, and this blogcrush.
No need for me to escalate my coining of FUNemployment. I literally laughed hard once I started seeing newspapers in my area use the term. It was bound to happen, and I’m sure someone started to say it way before me. However, I do think I was the first to say it in Pennsylvania for sure.
Keep on blogging out! You rule.

Nice write up Elisa. Rich is a great blogger, writer, and most importantly, a good guy. It’s been a pleasure meeting him and working with him on Corn on the Job’s redesign. Expect big things from him moving forward! Glad I could provide the introduction between the two of you!

Wow, thanks for highlighting the great site! I’m already liking the post on how to answer those generic, fluff interview questions.
