Gen-Y Gives Thanks For Thanksgiving

24 November 2009 8 Comments

I’m taking a little bit of a break from my #BlogCrush series to feature another series that I’ve been reading pretty diligently the whole month of November.

Sharalyn Hartwell has been collecting submissions all month long and posting them from bloggers across the internet.  Many of the submissions are folks who have been featured in my #BlogCrushes.  Others are bloggers I want to feature.

Regardless, the Gen Y Gives Thanks series is phenomenal.  So instead of reading about one featured #BlogCrush this Thanksgiving week I urge you to check out a whole lotta gratitude/appreciation/thanks going on.

————————————

When we are children, most of us are brought up to depend on everyone else.  Parents/family/guardians provide things like shelter and food.  Our teachers provide us with new things to learn and expand our horizons.  Our friends provide us with the essential team members necessary to create a pick-up backyard football game.  Eventually you start providing some of these things for yourself.  Maybe it’s a dinner you have to make at age 15 cause your parents can’t make it home.  Perhaps you take out books from the library that get you thinking in a way you’ve never thought in school.  Or you take hikes up mountainsides to sit at the top and look out over the lakes and trees and lose yourself in your thoughts.  For me, this indepence was like a shiny present that someone had bestowed on my at the age of 19.  And I went out of my way to build walls and rely on no one but myself.  Like a badge of honor I made sure that my life was my own and control was all mine.  Control became an obsession of mine, a card I knew I always had to play.  When control was lost, I did everything in my power to regain it.

This year I began some big changes though.  As a result of my current job I began planning out my next couple years, and the reality of owning my own business.  After ten years of never going on more than a third date with anyone I began actively “putting myself out there again.”  I started my blog and shared some things about myself that I had been scared to share with even my closest friends.  Through all the changes I re-learned an important lesson from my youth.  I live with my younger sister.  She is my best friend.  She cooks most of our dinners, cleans the house most of the time and in general takes care of everything here with my crazy schedules.  She told me “When you said you are planning on opening your business I knew that I’d have to do this stuff so you can follow your dream.  You know how proud I am of you, right?”  I have gone out on a bunch of dates this year, which have all led to a whole bunch of relationship failure.  I’ve made some pretty amazing connections with people on my blog and though they sometimes hurt me cause I’ve let them get close, I have come to depend on many of them.

Yep, this year the thing that I am most grateful for is working on learning that sometimes you get the most out of life by depending on others just as much as you do yourself.
(PS – I was so honored to be asked to be a part of this, above is my submission)

Inconvenience of Change, Appreciation Revolution, Gen Y Gives Thanks – there is so much GOOD to be had out there within our community. If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that we are a generation striving to do more, be more, give back, and make the world we live in that much better. I’m thankful for a LOT of things this Thanksgiving – and a lot of that thanks comes back to everyone I’ve met online over the past year. The friendships and connections I’ve made are irreplaceable.

Wishing you a happy early Thanksgiving Elisa. Even if you did kick my butt (barely) in Fantasy. Cheers!

Matt – That is part of why I love Sharalyn’s series. It’s a reminder to everyone that Gen Y is not necessarily some spoiled little generation that doesn’t appreciate and have gratitude for the things in their life. I think the opposite is the case, we in fact have a GREAT deal of both.

And sorry about fantasy. I was really expecting CJ to pull it out for you….looks like the OTHER CJ pulled it out for Ben though. :P

Here, here! I’m so glad you featured the Gen Y Gives Thanks series. When Sharalyn first told me about it and asked if she could kind of copy my idea from the Appreciation Revolution, I happily agreed. She’s continuing the mission, reminding people to appreciate and be thankful, and like Matt said, showing the world that we are a generation that wants to make our world a better place. How wonderful is that?! Happy Thanksgiving Elisa! I’m grateful for you :)

Aw, thanks Sam. The feeling is VERY mutual! And I’m glad you gave Sharalyn the go ahead to pay the Appreciation Revolution forward. I am loving all the love floating around the past 6 months or so!

This is why I love social media, Elisa…Because it enables you to form connections with incredible people like yourself who open themselves up. And you realize that these people share your very thoughts without even realizing it. More than once today people have expressed emotions that I haven’t been able to put into words myself — my own motivations and why I do what I do, why I’m afraid like I’m afraid, and why I’m so grateful for what I have. While our stories are different, so much of those basic fundamentals remain the same.

I loved Matt’s Inconvenience of Change series because it was a chorus of voices speaking about a topic with varying opinions and insights. I adored Sam’s Appreciation Revolution because it truly was a revolution and appreciation goes such a long, long way. And I love reading Sharalyn’s series because, like appreciation, while our generation tends to look far into the future and wish for more, we are still so grateful for what we have in the now.

So you know what I’m grateful for? Having crept into this crazy world of blogging and twittering and meeting real and true friends like you and Sam and Kris and others, with the potential of meeting and finding those true friendships with so many more. With social media, I think we’re rarely in complete control — and it’s exhilarating and scary and I can’t wait for more.

Love this post. LOVE this post.

Susan, I would tend to agree. Some of the relationships I’ve forged thru social media are closer than ones that I’ve made in the past few years of real life. I wonder how much of it is the “type” of person who uses social media. I mean, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a total geek and rather awkward on lots of things. I’m nervous, not all that eloquent, shy…should I go on? But I’ve found so many people in this forum who say and think exactly what I want to say/what I think, and while it’s creepy as hell it’s also quite kinda comforting to know there are others like me…finally!

And you prove an interesting point I don’t frequently think about. My social media world IS one where I have very little control over stuff. Sometimes it makes me break out in hives. Other times I’m fine with it. I’m not like that with anything else.

Thank you so much for this, Elisa! This project has been one of the most amazing things ever. I’ve connected with some incredible people (i.e. YOU) and I’m just so grateful.

The bottom line: if there weren’t so many great Gen Y’ers like you out there, there would be no Gen Y Gives Thanks to write! So thank you all for being so great

Thank YOU Sharalyn for organizing. I was more than happy to get the word out about the series. I figured this week was the perfect time to do it too. I’m most grateful, as well, for being able to connect with you. I love meeting new fantastic folks to learn from and grow with. :)
