BlogCrush – Sydney Owen
Every week I’ll be updating The Webb with a little ditty about my most recent blogcrush – a blog that I follow frequently and find inspiration, laughter and deep thoughts from. You know who they are, those bloggers that you’ve never even met but you feel a strange connection…you almost have a little crush on them? These are most definitely folks on my blog roll, and if you are reading and subscribing to The Webb they should be on yours, too.
I apologize to my blog readership for not introducing you to this #BlogCrush sooner. Everyone Tweeted and linked and TOLD me I should be following her, but for some reason I only occasionally dropped in to scan over the posts (hey, what can I say…I have over 300 blogs in my reader, always looking for the next crush.) And in truth, it wasn’t until I got a Google Alert about this post about MindCrushes (I have an alert set up on BlogCrush and the pingbacks set Google off!) that made me check out Sydney Owen’s blog, Unfiltered.
Sydney is one of the most relatable bloggers I’ve encountered online. She tells stories in a way that make you feel like you are sitting across the table from her at the coffee shop while she regales you with her latest tale of dating horror. This is especially evidenced by the odd phenomenon I’ve seen on her blog of “hate commenters” that continue reading her blog and leave negative comments. Most anyone would tell these people to pound sand and leave them alone (or at least ask “Why do you keep reading then?!) People seem to have an especially hard time aligning the fact that Sydney is an extremely accomplished young woman living on her own in Chicago and adjusting to post-graduate life with the idea that she is still a young 20-something living her life and figuring it out. Amazingly, with all this she STILL dares to share herself in a completely “unfiltered” format with the world. THAT is a strong woman.
Of course anyone frequenting my own blog knows that I am a fan of anyone willing to share an adorably dorky nature with the world, and I have definitely found a kindred spirit in Sydney. Whether she is writing about former relationships or phantom iPhone vibrations she injects a humourous dose of analogy into business and life lessons. Her current “Unfiltered” blog posts are my favorite part of her blog, but any of her former insights about business, social media and Gen-Y workers are also gems. Plus she has moose pajamas…and this girl from Maine has to appreciate ANYONE with moose pajamas!
So if you are looking for a great blog about a young woman living on her own in “the big city” and defining her life on terms she wants (and sometimes learning to roll with the punches of it) while also throwing in some pretty savvy insight into PR/marketing/biz then check out Unfiltered.

Elisa,
Can I say THANK YOU for getting it? and BTW, do you need a MOM? I.LOVE.YOU. and now I need to back read your blog.
Haha, well I can only take credit for putting all the great stuff that Sydney says and does into a neat little 3-paragraph synopsis form. So the real kudos are to her (which I’m sure you shower her with all the time!)
Speaking of which, I am VERY blessed to have a Mom & Dad (Mims & PDiddy as you are reading back posts/comments) who are amazingly supportive and loving and wonderful. But I REALLY do appreciate the offer.
One, I had NO CLUE you had a blogcrush on me. Two, I’m honored. Three, I re-read every single post you linked to here and it’s funny to see how my writing has evolved, what has happened in my life, and how my attitude has changed.
Thanks SO MUCH for this – it made my week! You’re thebombdotcom!
Sydney´s last blog ..What I’m looking forward to in 2010
One – Oh, I’m stealthy about it. Basically, when I start commenting on blogs you’ve never seen me on before and I’m gushing…it’s a safe bet.
Two – Thanks for putting out such great content. That’s how you become a #BlogCrush, the choice is every blogger’s.
Three – Aw, what a great idea to look through. I like doing that with my archives sometimes. Looking back to see where I’ve been and what my style/aptitude was. It’s always a learning experience and pretty fun!
Again, thank YOU for being crush-worthy!
I am such a HUGE Sydney fan – so glad to see her featured as a BlogCrush. Elisa – as always, you’ve done a beautiful job of capturing what makes Sydney so great.
This line particularly stood out: “She tells stories in a way that make you feel like you are sitting across the table from her at the coffee shop.” SO TRUE! And that’s why I always look forward to the new Unfiltered posts. Sydney – you are such a gift to the blogging community – keep up the AWESOME, honest, unfiltered work
