5 Things You May Not Know About Me

19 March 2010 20 Comments

So I am in general opposed to meme’s, forwards, quizzes, etc.

With that being said, I’m totally doing one today.  Two of my favorite bloggers wrote posts this week with a few little snippets of information about them no one (or very few people) would know.  It was really fun to read both, and learn a little more about them.

It’s always so great to learn more about people online, to glimpse a little more into their worlds.  To see who they are in real life, when they aren’t typing away at a keyboard.  Sometimes you are lucky enough to email back and forth, to set up a Skype date,  set up an appointment to chat on the phone and then there’s the times you meet up with them or fly across the country to finally slumber party IRL.

I love meeting new people and learning new things about them.  Thing is I’m pretty shy and don’t put myself out there near enough to meet people.  At least meet them on a level more than pleasant niceties and perhaps one or two exchanges of chatter.

Now, for what you are all here for, as promised at the beginning…5 Things You May Not Know About Me:

1.)  I was in the emergency room last summer and almost had emergency gall bladder surgery.  Instead, I spent the night in the ER and I was the only one there on a Friday night with BAC under .10.  I did some research on my own before going under the laproscopic “knife” and discovered with MY doctor I had a rare condition where a yeast infection forms in your intestine.  And they wanted to take my gall bladder!

2.)  I have secured a bib for the past 4 years to the Beach 2 Beacon 10K Road Race hosted here in Maine by Joan Benoit-Samuelson (first Olympic woman’s marathon gold medalist.)  For the prior three I have seriously sprained my ankle 1-2 months before the race.  To the point where the physical therapist recommends against running on it.  I’m registration # 1743 this year…and plan on NOT spraining my ankle.

3.)  I joke frequently about how I don’t like to cook, yet I’m learning to like it more and more (can’t ask my roommate to cook EVERY night, and take out gets expensive!)  Baking, however, I love to do.  Cookies, coffee cakes, brownies, bread…if it’s a pastry or dessert I’ll give it a whirl.  I’m partial to my peanut butter chip chocolate cookies and orange cranberry quick bread.

4.)  I got my tongue pierced when I was in college.  I told the guy I was allergic to iodine but it was all he had to “sterilize” so I went with it and my tongue was swollen up so much I could barely breathe for spring break during my sophomore year.  I “took it out” about 18 months later when I accidentally dropped the ball from the barbell into a sink drain while traveling and didn’t have a spare with me.

5.)   One of my first “jobs” in college was as an inter-library loan specialist.  Which means I pulled folios from the archives, photocopied them in a tiny closet of a room, and mailed them to people who were requesting them from the University.  I left when I got a job with the Student Government.  Three months later my best friend was laid off because they determined that the working conditions with all the toner and fumes in the un-ventilated closet-like space were toxic.

I’m gonna throw in a bonus as well, cause it’s been rocking people’s world lately (though I didn’t realize that people “may not know”)

I am turning 30 this May (like in 2 months.)

I’m not sure if I “feel” 30 or what that means exactly.  I’m pretty happy with where my life is so I’m not going to have a “post-quarter life crisis” or anything.  I don’t think…

Well, I won’t as long as people stop acting so floored and shocked whenever they find out that I’m “old.”

I mean really people, it’s not like I’m OLD old.  I don’t think…

But I digress.

Now I’d love to hear more about YOU.  Please leave comments below or links to similar posts on your own site/blog.  Let’s get the sharing started!

Hooray for learning more about people. I’ll have to make a trip up to Maine to try out your cookies. And, I didn’t know that you are older than me. Huh, go figure.

Thanks for sharing, Elisa. I guess I’ll have to jump on the sharing bandwagon. First I have to come up with things to share.

Everyone should come to visit Maine at least once, and not just for my cookies (hrmmm…that could be taken the wrong way!)

As for my age, I’ll just assume no one knows it because I look so young and/or I’m so young at heart. :)

      • Kristina

Maine is for sure on my list of places to visit as a newbie to the East Coast (how long can I keep the newbie status for?)

And…it’s both, you don’t look it and you are only as old as you think you are :)

So nice to learn a few things about you but did you have to make a big deal out of 30?! I’m 32 this year!

Jeremy, I actually thought you were 3-4 years YOUNGER than me til you mentioned otherwise on Twitter a few months ago. So you’re in the same boat!

  • Amy

You’re turning 30? Why wasn’t I aware of such things? You don’t share anymore!

    • http://www.opheliaswebb.com Elisa

Just to catch you up…I’m turning 30, working in sales, also freelance write, living in South Portland…roommate’s kind of a dork though

      • Amy

        I find that offensive.

I find your roommate’s hair offensive

          I mean…umm….crap…

1.) That’s scary. I try to tell myself Doctor’s are “practicing medicine,” because we hear so many crazy horror stories. But they’ve saved my life, as well as my Dad’s so they’re okay with me for now.

2.) Joan Benoit is AWESOME. Good luck in your 10K

3.) I’m from the south. Every woman should learn to cook :)

    4.) Ow.

    5.) Jobs. Pfft.

Bonus.) I hope I make it to 30.

Ryan – I definitely think doctor’s do the best with what they have and respect the hell out of them. With my fibromyalgia I see my PCP every 6 months. That night in the ER with an inflamed gall bladder they made a decision, it just happened to not be the correct one. Once it gets to the point where people want to cut into me and take organs out, I like second opinions. :P

As for the cooking, making chili this afternoon. Probably not as good as your Southern Texas woman chili, but I find it yummy. I was gonna make a wisecrack about you being a Southern boy who must know how to rope a steer or hogtie a pig, but considering your Grandfather I’m sure that you do!

  • Mims

Yes I remember the day well….And you are a great cook of both meals and pastries. I will put a post-it on one of Gaggies cookbooks for you.
Don’t forget how doctors perform miracles every day. And you are one of those living miracles..

    • http://www.opheliaswebb.com Elisa Doucette

Mims – Remember which day? The night I was in the ER or the spring break you had to take me home and feed me popsicles the entire time? :)

And yes, I have a lot of respect for doctors. As I mentioned, I just like the second opinion when it comes to that whole hacking into my body thing!

When I was trying to come up with an “About Me” section for my blog, I didn’t know what to do. So I went back to that “25 Random Things” Meme from a while back and sort of turned that into a post about me.

    The Girl Behind the Curtain

Also, that’s scary about the gall bladder!!

Tina – I looked my 25 Things meme over as well for some inspiration when I wrote my About Me section. I figured I had already reached deep within and written out those points, so why not gently recycle them!? :)

The whole gall bladder/intestines thing is much better now, and I have a whole slew of medicine and supplements I get to take to control it. Good times!

Ok…..So why did I not know the Tongue Piercing Story????
Tongue Rings have actually scared me a bit… Tattoos nahhhh, tongue rings yaaaaa….

The whole swelling of the tongue, etc… Not for me…
Though I have friends who have had their’s pierced in the past and they love playing with them.

    • http://www.opheliaswebb.com Elisa Doucette

Noreen – Hrmm…not sure. I had the tongue ring when I was hanging out with everyone. Had it til Summer of 2002 in fact.

And yes, I loved playing with my tongue ring too. In retrospected people around me might have thought it was weird, but kept me occupied and my mind from wandering TOO far!

I admire your honesty Elisa, especially about your age. Many women would do everything to hide their age, but you have been open. Nice to meet a true person like you. :-)

    • http://www.opheliaswebb.com Elisa Doucette

Walter – Thanks! Fortunately 30 is not quite an age that I have to start lying about, at least not yet. Though considering the way everyone is shocked by this I think I might be able to get away with starting to fib and clinging to 29! :)

In reality I’m excited to turn 30. As one of my friends (Melissa Mullen) recently wrote, 30 finally feels like the age that I FEEL my age. Not too old or too young, I’m in a Goldilocks state of being just right.
