BlogCrush – Colin Wright

13 April 2010 14 Comments

I update The Webb on Tuesdays with a little ditty about my most recent blogcrush – a blog that I follow frequently and find inspiration, laughter and deep thoughts from. You know who they are, those bloggers that you’ve never even met but you feel a strange connection…you almost have a little crush on them? These are most definitely folks on my blog roll, and if you are reading and subscribing to The Webb they should be on yours, too.

I first learned about this week’s #BlogCrush when a former #BlogCrush wrote about his magnetism and gushed in a totally manly bromance post.  Soon enough I noticed that a lot of my fellow bloggers were re-Tweeting his stuff and conversing regularly with him. I’m not sure if it’s just the amazing posts he puts out over at Exile Lifestyle or his jet-setting location independent minimalist lifestyle or the fact that he’s a very genuine and successful multidisciplinary graphic designer in the social media world (an anomaly, I assure you) but Colin Wright is definitely a great person to be connected with.

Now I know a few of you just read that description and want to immediately click off this page, thinking “Great, another LIP (Location Independent Professional) who drones on about the lifestyle and is gonna tell me I suck cause I’m not doing it.”  Not gonna lie, I was hesitant to follow him because of this stigma.  But the thing I learned quickly about Colin was that he is NOTHING like this stereotype.  Sure, he is going to gush about the amazing places he visits and encourage everyone to at least consider traveling to enhance their lives.  And yes, he takes photos of everything he owns to remind people of the effectiveness and liberation of minimalist living.  One of the biggest differences is that Colin seems to thrive not only on philosophizing his ideas out, but he also begs to know what you think/do/are in return.  He’s one of the most accessible people I’ve encountered online (and I’ve encountered a lot!)

The thing with Colin is that he could get by just with his insights on topics like those, but he really has amazing stuff to say ABOUT SO MANY OTHER THINGS.  Heck, when I started creating Delicious bookmarks for Google Reader articles I wanted to keep (yes, I know I can share them, but I like Delicious better) I quickly realized that his posts were regularly finding their way into my tags.   Whether he is writing about the challenges of running a creative business or personal renaissances his posts rarely miss the mark.

And if you haven’t downloaded his “How To Be Remarkable” E-Book yet, then I highly suggest you go post-haste and do that.  Don’t worry…I’ll wait…it’s that good.

So if you are looking to join the adventure of a location independent entrepreneur who isn’t going to preach at you and has SO much more to talk about than just travel and running a business then head on over to Exile Lifestyle.

Who is your #BlogCrush in the blogosphere? Make sure to update it on your blog on Tuesdays! Wanna learn how #BlogCrush works? Check out the guide.

Ok, you were right. I clicked over still kind of skeptical, but he has a lot of great posts and ideas that can be applied to thinking differently even if we’re not going to give up all our possessions and become mobile. Just from looking briefly, the video on his main page was pretty interesting too.
    Thanks for this :)

Kat – I feel ya! I have a soft spot of nausea for many of the “location indies” who come streaming across the Twitter-sphere. Which is part of what I love about Colin’s blog. He COULD be one of those folks. Hell, he could be in the royal court of these folks with the experience and success he’s had.

Yet he still manages to not talk/write AT people, which is the thing I admire about him. Glad you meandered over and discovered that for yourself as well. :)

Thanks Kat :) I appreciate you taking the time!

  2. All I’m gonna say about my bro is this: his blog doesn’t make him justice yet. He’s by far, one of the top 5 people I have ever met when it comes to stimulating debate, cultural knowledge and general kindness. Sadly, most of those things can only be seen and appreciated fully when meeting him in person. But fear not world, I’m sure meeting everyone in this planet is one secret goal of his.

You’re a gentleman and a scholar, brother. I am looking forward to meeting more of my readers in person, and hopefully I’ll be able to as my travels continue.

You and I need to hang out in real life again in the near-future, too. Perth, perhaps?

Carlos – Yes, I am already jealous that you and Colin have gotten to debate deep philosophies in person over a nice bottle of “brain stimulator.” WE only get to debate over Twitter, though sometimes I am drinking.

      Er…umm…I mean…

This is about Colin. Right. :)

Thanks for offering some real life insight, it’s always awesome to learn that people are as great “IRL” as they are online. Very cool.

I soooo missed the blogcrush series, and Colin is the perfect feature for a comeback! Elisa, as always, you did an incredible write-up of an equally amazing blogger. Colin is wise, humble, interesting, friendly, and just all-around awesome – and in fact, I wouldn’t have even met him if it weren’t for you! Kudos on another great write-up, and Colin – keep up the kick-ass work over at Exile Lifestyle :)

Jenny – Aw, well the BlogCrush is making a comeback, though not quite as regularly as before. I’m glad you enjoy it. Especially since I’ve got the next 4 months scheduled. :)

And I agree, in looking over the potentials in my Google Reader Colin’s blog screamed “Make your comeback with me.” Especially because it is location-independent entrepreneurial awesomeness BUT at the same time it offers much more. Again with the very cool.

Oh wow, I just got back from a 2-day Internet-less stint in Auckland and was shocked to find this waiting for me in my list of feeds!

I’m humbled by the kind words, Elisa, and honestly really impressed by how many links you were able to fit in to one post! Thanks!

    • Colin – What can I say, backlinking is a marketable skill. :) Sorry if I inundated your mail with pingbacks!

As for the kind words, they’re only a little synopsis of the awesome you put out. So thank YOU for being awesome. But you already know that.

  5. Sean says:

If there were one other blogger I could meet right now, it would without a doubt be Colin – for all the reasons stated above. He seems to be about as genuine a guy that you will find, and the material he puts out always seems to break through the noise and find a place right in front of me.

Very well deserved blog crush! haha

    • Colin Wright says:

Thanks a lot, buddy! Can’t wait to finally meet you in Thailand in August…we’ll have to go out on the town and start a dual-guitar band. You don’t see enough of those.

    • Sean – WTF mate, not me?! :P

In all seriousness, though, obviously I agree. As you noted, I DID just write a whole post about him and all. But yes, it seems that Colin is the same online as off, a rarity I’m learning more and more. I hope you get your meeting with Colin, I would love to be a fly on the wall for the shenanigans you two would rile up!
