Operation Beautiful (And A Giveaway!)

24 August 2010 22 Comments

I am near obsessed with Post-It Notes.

Seriously.  They are quite possibly my favorite office supply (if one is able to have an actual “favorite office supply?!)

Post-It Notes, for those of you living deep within the caverns of the Earth under rocks, are little 3″ x 3″ squares that have a thin slightly adhesive film along the back that allow you to jot clarifying details and leave little reminders for yourself.

Post-It Notes are only a small piece, but as the mission of the Operation Beautiful states, it really IS that simple.  All you need is a piece of paper and a pen.

The project started simply enough for Caitlin Boyle.  After too many years of being “her own worst enemy” Caitlin decided that things needed to change.  In her teens she used pain to release the feelings of depression and angst.  In the youngest parts of her adulthood it was ”calorie counting” and mentally berating herself.  A few years later, overwhelmed by stress and anxiousness and general unhappiness, the negativity again reared it’s ugly head.

It all caused her to dislike and even hate parts of herself that she couldn’t see in the mirror.

I too, suffer from an impossible quest for perfection.  And I too, have used all the techniques Caitlin did (and some others) in an attempt to punish myself for never being able to attain it.  I carry the scars on my arms as constant reminders that my best never seemed to be good enough.  That, in my mind, boys didn’t flirt with me or want to be in relationships with me because I wasn’t pretty and skinny and worthwhile.   That I was always the frumpy throwaway sidekick to my beautiful and accomplished girl-friends, and didn’t deserve anything better for myself.

It isn’t about how you look when you peer in a mirror or judge yourself against the magazine images.  The project is NOT a call to action for feminism or girl power or cause-activism.  As I read through Caitlin’s published manifestation of Operation Beautiful, I was overwhelmed with the message the book had to share:

Operation Beautiful is about who you are as a person.  It is about celebrating your unique personality, loving yourself fully, and letting go of any negativity that weighs you down…Operation Beautiful is about one simple truth: You are beautiful…just the way you are!

Each chapter (Fat Talk, Family and Friends, Fitness, Food, Faith, and Going Forward) contains not only pieces of advice and Caitlin’s thoughts on the subject, but also Post-It notes and shared thoughts from readers across the globe.  Operation Beautiful started because one day, as Caitlin Boyle stood in front of a mirror in a public restroom, she realized that there were probably other people in the world who needed to hear one very important message: “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!“  She knew, because it was the mantra she had been desperately seeking for herself.

Since that day, Operation Beautiful has been a movement that has spread globally.  A way for people to encourage others by paying-it-foward and leaving their own messages to be found in public location.  But like so many things, by doing something to uplift others, the messages are just as important to the person leaving them as the person finding them.

I asked the folks at Gotham Books if they would also send me a second copy of Operation Beautiful to give to a lucky reader and they were more than happy to oblige!

Before I do my note, let me say that this post was EXACTLY what I needed to read. So Elisa, love, you wrote a note for me! And I’ll be getting this book myself if I don’t win it!

My note is for my Tara: You are a blessing. Your laugh… your smile… trust your heart and your faith.

“You are the light of a life; you make a difference every day.”

I truly believe that everyone gives something to someone every day. Whether you know it, you make changes in little ways and make a day brighter.

I love this project! Thanks for highlighting it! :)

On the day you were born, the oceans roured and the mountains trembled; the sun stopped to look and the birds shreaked the news, on the day you were born; all the mothers and fathers wished you were their baby girl, on the day you were born; the day you were born was the happiest day of my life because I could look at you, and smell you, and kiss you, and love you every day, all day. I’m the luckiest person on earth because you are my daughter. I love you.

I wish I could leave “you’re stronger than you give yourself credit for” on my mother’s mirror since she underestimates herself constantly and she’s overcome so many obstacles, I just wish she could start believing in her own inner strength!

    Dear *******,

You are an amazing person. I don’t know what induced your friend request to me on Facebook that late September day last week. But it was the beginning of a journey for me.

Not many people truly accept me for who I am, for all my faults. I guess I have always craved that unconditional acceptance. I have parted ways with most people who want to change me or make me “better”, “acceptable”. I will not do that with you. You understand who I am and take me for what I am. For this I feel blessed. I think we share a sort of affection for each other. Not a romantic one, but a deep abiding agapos (is that the word?), or reverence for each other’s spirit. I know I can trust you with the various and sundry issues of my mind and heart. And you should know you can trust me; I think you do.

I know times can be tough, and indeed they are now. But you should know that I will not leave you nor forsake you. You are a very dear friend. Your star shines bright. The universe cradles you in her bosom. And all your dreams will come true. I will be there to witness the fulfillment, and rejoice in your good fortune. Shine on

    -Love, Darryl

Great post! Gave me cause to pause for a moment to think about your contest. So much to say and so little room on even the biggest Post-It Note.

Anyway, what I would say to the person I am thinking of is this: “You have the power within yourself to do and be anything you want. You are a shining star. Be yourself. Shine bright!”

Operation Beautiful is such a wonderful idea. :)

I would write: “Smile. Breathe. Slow down. You’re doing an amazing job.” If I saw that during an extremely stressful day at work, I’d probably cry.

    Great post!

I love this post, Operation Beautiful and you! I finally made time to read this post because I knew it would be amazing. And I don’t want to be entered into the contest because well… a copy is on my coffee table and I can read it whenever I want. But I would write:
“Even on your worse day, believe in yourself. This will make you more beautiful than all the make up and fancy clothes in the world.”

    Yup, it’s true :)

  • Jessica

I agree with Sara, good timing! I just wrote a note to myself with a personal goal to be more positive and less hard on myself. The thing is, we all do it, but we don’t realize just how hard on ourselves we are until someone outside our daily life (for me it was a facebook friend) tells you, “You know, you are pretty awesome.”

    So I have two stickies:
