Writing On The Webb

8 October 2010 4 Comments

Yay, my little Friday series has a name!!!

Between the infusion of alliteration and the calling back to “writing” again and again, I remembered what I called my FIRST writing portfolio online.

WRITING ON THE WEBB

I realized the second I thought of it, it would be a perfect name for posts that highlight not only other places I’ve written, but other writings I’ve found around the web as well.

What I’ve Written:

  • Here on Ophelia’s Webb I wrote about the time I background checked Chris Guillebeau before helping out with his book signing in The Art Of The Vouch.
  • Over on The Single Slice I managed to find the white girl version of Hitch and she lives right here in Portland, Maine.  Got some great advice on how to build your confidence when you are tongue-tied around the opposite sex from Rachel Flehinger.
  • I also continue in my quest to help Mainer find where to drink in the Greater Portland area bi-weekly in the Bar Guide review of Byrnes Irish Pub, a pretty cool place that has an Irish Sing-A-Long night, complete with KAZOOS!

What I’ve Found:

  • If you are like me, you play along with Jeopardy nightly, trying to see if you’d win.  Get in on the secret by learning from Karl Coryat, a former $15,000 champ.  He made that $$ BEFORE Jeopardy totals were doubled, unlike that poser Ken Jennings. (h/t Alan Perlman for that find!)
  • BIG CONGRATS to the Brazen Careerist team on their expansion to new Washington DC offices.  And I gotta agree with Penelope, ladies, this Photis character appears to be a great catch, someone in DC should scoop him up.  Just check out Modite’s TwitPic of him at the hotel!
  • Fine, ok, I’ll admit it.  I don’t understand hipsters.  I mean, I sorta get it.  You’re super cool and above the status quo and uber-angsty and whatnot.  But I’m not gonna lie, it was exciting to read about the decline of hipsters as they become uncool.  It’s ALMOST as good as if superheroes were hipsters.
  • I am so ridiculously proud of Rev. Elsa Peters for taking a stand and for having the courage to Come Out and say We’re (Not) Straight on National Coming Out Day.

And finally, with the Facebook meme going around about where women like sex (ummm…I mean where they put their purses…) to raise awareness of cancer, I will once again say these two things:

  1. I think that activism is similar to grief.  Everyone does it in different ways on different levels.  How are we to know how getting involved in a silly and fun Facebook “game” might affect someone for the future.  Seeds, people, seeds.
  2. That being said, I firmly don’t think it should stop with a status update.  If you are going to take the time and energy to devote to that, then you can certainly find the time to donate, volunteer, Relay, Race, etc. for a cure for cancer.   Heck, even if you just post a link to a cancer website I’d be slightly kinder.

Cancer is not something we should keep secrets about.  It is dark and horrible and ridiculous.  It THRIVES in the shadows.   Which I why I’m doing my part again this year by participating in the Relay for Life of Greater Portland in June 2011.

Goal is set at $1000 – So donate early and donate often!!

:)

Ryan – Haha, I don’t even know this kid but it seems like someone should nominate him for The Bachelor or something. Everyone seems to be trying to set him up!

Haha, no Jeopardy no playground, what kind of life are you living down there in Boston?! No cable, so I’ve just played online like normal. Made me realize I’m better when I go with my first answer rather than second guessing.
